..swimming lessons..

for sometime i've been considering doing mom-and-tot swim lessons at the bountiful rec center. it's not that i think finn is by any means ready to swim on his own, more just that it would be something fun to do and something to get us out of the house. the main thing that has kept me from doing them is wondering what i'd do with sam while i was in the water with finn. a while ago i had the idea of having my mom come down, so she could watch sam while i swam with finn. but then i had the even better idea of having her swim with us, so she could take one, while i took one. i pitched the idea to her, she went for it, and bam! just like that we started swim lessons.

we did them 2 days a week for 4 weeks during the month of august. my mom had to miss the last couple classes because she had to start work, but that's okay, at least we got the bulk of classes in. it's amazing how much both boys enjoyed them, and how much they actually learned. no, they can't swim on their own yet, but we learned that sammy is a total fish in the water. he loves it! he didn't even mind being dunked and was not afraid to explore on his own (in shallow water, of course). it kinda makes me nervous, seeing what a dare-devil that kid is. definitely his father's son. :) finn, on the other hand, is very cautious and timid, but each lesson he would get a little braver and to things that tested his limits. he was jumping into the water on his own after a week or so, which was a big improvement. i think having other kids in the class (just 3 others) helped encourage him a bit. he loved blowing bubbles in the water, kicking and splashing, but he still won't let us dunk him and is very unsure about floating on his back and tummy. i'm sure it's just a phase and that in time he will have the desire to swim on his own.

swim lessons were a great way to wrap up our summer. i look forward to doing it again next year!
